This is an exquisite Edo period Kakejiku (Japanese hanging scroll) featuring the depiction of a Triad of Buddhist Deities. The central figure is Shaka Nyorai (Shakyamuni Buddha), the historical Buddha who attained enlightenment and is shown here seated in deep meditation. To his left is Fugen Bosatsu (Samantabhadra), the Bodhisattva of Universal Virtue, depicted riding a white elephant, symbolizing virtuous action and protection. To his right is Monju Bosatsu (Manjushri), the Bodhisattva of Wisdom, seated on a lion, embodying wisdom and clarity of thought.
This scroll beautifully illustrates the serene and divine presence of these deities, making it a valuable piece for those who appreciate Buddhist art and the rich cultural history of Japan. It is in remarkable condition considering its age and would be a significant addition to any collection of religious art or Japanese antiques.
