There are very few existing examples of this item, and not much information can be found on the internet, although there may be similar items in ethnic history museums. This is a small pouch that samurai would carry on their shoulders while traveling. The appearance of travelers would greatly differ depending on whether the journey was official or personal, as well as their social status.
Travelers typically wore a haori, kote, haramaki, and a suga-gasa, and covered their large and small swords with a bag. Since they had others to carry their luggage, they only needed to carry a small net pouch (uchikatsubaki) on their back, secured from the shoulder to the waist. The contents of the pouch seem to be similar to those of ordinary people.
It is crafted quite meticulously and is durable enough to be used even today.
This "Uchi-bukuro" (travel pouch) is a small storage bag designed to be worn on the back. While you may not find similar items in the United States or Europe, there are several comparable items to illustrate its purpose.
