Lacquer vase

The label reads "Takaoka City, Hakushitate Wax Colored Lacquer, 100-eye design." This is a lacquerware produced in Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture, Japan, finished with a traditional lacquer coating technique called "Hakushitate Wax Colored Lacquer".

Hakushitate Wax Colored Lacquer is a technique that produces a luxurious finish by coloring the gold or silver foil with wax and then applying transparent lacquer on top of it, which shines black. The 100-eye design indicates that small dotted patterns are applied.

It is unclear when this bucket was made, but it is not a recent item. Hakushitate Wax Colored Lacquer is a traditional technique that has been passed down since the Edo period and reached its heyday from the Meiji period to the Taisho period. Even today, traditional lacquerware making continues in and around Takaoka City.
