This is a profound original woodblock print (Mokuhanga) by the renowned Japanese master Iwao Akiyama (1921–2014). A student of the legendary Shiko Munakata, Akiyama is famous for his bold black-and-white aesthetic and his lifelong dedication to illustrating the free-verse haiku of the wandering Zen priest Santoka Taneda.

The Poetic Theme: The print features one of Santoka’s most iconic haiku: "Massugu na michi de samishii" ("Loneliness on a straight road") The artwork depicts a solitary, simplified figure—representing the poet himself—walking along a stark, diagonal path that bisects the darkness, perfectly capturing the Zen concept of solitude and the journey of life.
