Description
Iwao Akiyama Original Woodblock Print - Santoka Haiku "My Back in the Drizzle" 1974 Signed 158/200
This is a profound and highly collectible original woodblock print (Mokuhanga) by the renowned Japanese master Iwao Akiyama (1921–2014). Akiyama, a celebrated student of the legendary Shiko Munakata, is world-famous for his stark black-and-white style and his evocative illustrations of the free-verse haiku by the wandering Zen priest Santoka Taneda.
The Poetic Theme: This print features Santoka’s most famous and arguably most poignant haiku: "Ushiro sugata no shigurete yuku ka" ("My back view, going away into the drizzling rain") The artwork captures the essence of Zen solitude, showing the priest's lonely figure from behind as he disappears into the mist and rain, symbolized by the bold, dripping vertical lines and the abstract black forms above.
