Description

Authentic Edo Period Japanese Samurai Tessen - Solid Iron Fan 33cm Rare Daimyo Artifact

This is an exceptional and highly rare Antique Japanese Tessen (Iron Fan) dating back to the Edo Period (1603–1868). Unlike decorative or modern replica fans, this is a genuine piece of Samurai equipment, crafted entirely from iron for self-defense and ritual use.

Historical Significance: The Tessen was carried by Samurai as a tool of protection and status in environments where swords were prohibited. At a solid 367g, this fan was designed to be easily carried in a sash (obi) while remaining strong enough to parry strikes or be used as a blunt instrument if necessary.

Key Features:

  • Solid Iron Ribs: Crafted with all-metal sticks, providing a sturdy and realistic feel that distinguishes it from paper or bamboo replicas.

  • Edo Period Provenance: A genuine historical artifact. The heavy oxidation and deep patina on the iron surface are testaments to its centuries of history.

  • Traditional 33cm Size: A commanding length that reflects the dignity and authority of the Samurai who once carried it.

  • Wabi-Sabi Aesthetic: The aged iron and traces of original red pigment offer a profound sense of history and "distressed beauty".

Specifications:

  • Length: 33.0 cm / 13.0 in

  • Width (Closed): 2.0 cm / 0.8 in

  • Weight: 367 g / 0.81 lbs

  • Ribs: As seen in the photographs, the iron ribs (sticks) are visibly bent and distorted. This distortion is a hallmark of its age and suggests a long history of use or storage.

  • Surface: Features natural rust and surface pitting throughout, consistent with genuine iron artifacts of the Edo period.

  • Traces of original red pigment remain visible on the outer ribs.
