Antique Japanese "Dai" and "Shō" Calendar Signs –
Meiji Period
This is a pair of antique Japanese calendar signs indicating "Dai no Tsuki" (Large Month) and "Shō no Tsuki" (Small Month). In the traditional Japanese lunar calendar, months were either 29 or 30 days long. These signs were commonly displayed in stores to inform customers of the month’s length, as payments were often settled at the end of the month—on the 30th for large months and the 29th for small months. Since the month’s length varied each year, these signs helped merchants and customers keep track of payment dates.
Each sign features a raised relief kanji character on a lacquered wooden board. The bold strokes represent "Dai" (large, 30-day month), while the more delicate strokes signify "Shō" (small, 29-day month).
