Description
This is possibly Japanese but most likely a Chinese antique bamboo lacquer basket from the Ming to Qing dynasty. The entire basket is intricately woven with thin bamboo and coated in lacquer. On all four sides, auspicious mythical creatures such as phoenixes, dragons, and sacred turtles are beautifully depicted in red lacquer designs. The fabric portion is thought to be made of leather, chirimen (crepe), or silk.
