Japanese Zen Calligraphy Hanging Scroll Signed Eihei Goyu – Meiji Period

This is an antique Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku) featuring bold Zen Buddhist calligraphy, signed “Eihei Goyu” (永平悟由). The same name is also written on the old storage label attached to the scroll, supporting its traditional attribution.

The work is believed to date from the late 19th to early 20th century, during the Meiji period or shortly thereafter.

The central calligraphy is executed in powerful, expressive black ink with broad and energetic brushstrokes. The inscription appears to be a Zen phrase, although some of the highly cursive characters are difficult to identify with complete certainty.

The scroll is mounted with greenish-brown brocade decorated with floral and vine motifs. Above the calligraphy is a gold-toned decorative band featuring a repeating sayagata geometric pattern, a traditional Japanese Buddhist motif.

Several red seals are impressed on the work, together with the signature “Eihei Goyu.” The roller ends are made of a pale, bone-like material, although the precise material has not been identified.

Condition:
The scroll is in antique condition and shows considerable signs of age. There are water stains, foxing, discoloration, creases, and other age-related marks on both the front and reverse.

The mounting fabric also shows natural wear and discoloration, and the roller ends have surface marks and signs of age.

These conditions are consistent with an old hanging scroll that has been preserved and used over many years.
