Description:
This is a Japanese antique kakejiku (hanging scroll) featuring Daruma (Bodhidharma), the legendary founder of Zen Buddhism. Executed in bold sumi-e (ink wash) style, the portrait emphasizes Daruma’s intense gaze and ascetic presence, capturing the spirit of Zen.
The scroll is mounted on traditional silk brocade, with visible age adding to its character. The wooden scroll box (tomobako) is titled 「達摩図」(Daruma-zu), meaning “Image of Daruma.”
The frontal composition and expressive brushwork suggest it may be modeled after the famous Daruma portraits by Miyamoto Musashi, the legendary swordsman and Zen-influenced artist.
This piece is ideal for display in a tea room, meditation space, or collection of Japanese Buddhist or Zen art.
