■ Description Item Details This is a rare and structurally fascinating Japanese Antique Kappa (Traveler's Rain Cape) or Cloak, dating back to the Taisho Period (c. 1912-1926).

  • Ingenious "Sandwich" Construction (Waterproof & Windproof):

    • As you noted, the fabric feels stiff and heavy. This is because a layer of Kakishibu (Persimmon Tannin) dyed Washi Paper or Oiled Paper is sandwiched between the outer indigo fabric and the inner lining.

    • Before the invention of modern waterproof materials, this traditional technique was used to repel rain and block freezing winds. The stiffness is a testament to this hidden historical craftsmanship.

  • Fabric (Aizome Boro):

    • Outer: Beautiful Indigo-dyed cotton with a sharp Striped (Shima) pattern.

    • Lining: A stylish checkered pattern cotton fabric.

    • The combination of patterns and the heavy, rugged texture gives it a fantastic "Boro" aesthetic.

  • Details: It features unique cloth-covered wooden toggle buttons.

  • Usage: A true collector's piece of Japanese folk textile history. It can be displayed as art or worn as a unique fashion statement.

Size (Image3

  • Length: approx. 93 cm / 36.6 in

  • Neck Circumference: approx. 45 cm / 17.7 in

  • Bottom Hem Sweep (Width): approx. 140 cm / 55.1 in

Condition Condition: Antique / Good

  • General: It is in good antique condition.

  • Texture: The fabric is stiff and rigid due to the internal paper interlining, which is the correct original characteristic of this type of garment.

  • Wear: There are signs of age, fading, and wear typical of Boro items, adding to its vintage charm.
