Authentic Japanese Jidō-men Mask - Dry Lacquer "Kanshitsu" - National Treasure Replica

This is a powerful and high-quality Japanese chi-men (治道面) mask, masterfully crafted as a "Mo-Kokubo" (National Treasure Replica). It is a faithful recreation of a sacred ritual object used in Gyōdō, a traditional Buddhist processional ceremony.

The "Jidō-men" - The Sacred Pathfinder: In Buddhist rituals, the Jidō leads the procession. Its role is to symbolically clear the path of evil spirits and obstacles, ensuring a safe passage for the deities and monks. Characterized by its fierce, muscular facial structure and intense gaze, it represents divine authority and protection.

Ancient "Kanshitsu" Craftsmanship: This mask is made using the prestigious Dry Lacquer (Kanshitsu) technique, a method famously used for sacred Buddhist statues since the 8th century (Nara period). Layers of lacquer-soaked hemp cloth are applied over a mold, resulting in a lightweight yet exceptionally durable, stone-like texture that develops a profound depth over time.

Key Features:

  • Profound Aged Texture: The red and black lacquer finish features an intentional "antique" patina to replicate the weathered look of ancient temple treasures.

  • Sacred Lineage: The interior bears a historical label identifying it as a ritual processional mask (Gigaku mask of Chidō).

  • Substantial Presence: Weighing 684g, this mask has a solid and heavy feel, distinguishing it from common wooden or resin replicas.

Specifications:

  • Height: 26.0 cm / 10.2 in

  • Width: 19.0 cm / 7.5 in

  • Depth (Nose Length): 12.5 cm / 4.9 in

  • Weight: 684 g / 1.5 lbs

  • Material: Kanshitsu (Dry Lacquer & Hemp cloth)

Condition Report: Authentic Vintage/Antique Condition.

  • Note on Nose: There is visible lacquer peeling (exfoliation) on the tip of the nose. This is a common sign of aging in genuine lacquerware and adds to its historical "Wabi-sabi" character.

  • The mask remains structurally sound. Please inspect all photos for the detailed textures and markings.
