Description
This antique wooden zushi houses an Amitabha Buddha (Amida Nyorai) statue, embodying the serene elegance of Japanese Buddhist devotion. Compact and portable, this shrine reflects the refined craftsmanship found in traditional Japanese religious art.
Inside the gold-leafed case stands a finely carved wooden Amida Buddha on a lotus pedestal. The figure displays the typical mudras of Amida: the right hand raised in the gesture of reassurance (semui-in) and the left lowered in the wish-granting gesture (yogan-in). Despite its age, the statue retains a strong spiritual and artistic presence.
Such zushi statues were often owned as Kabuto-butsu (“helmet Buddhas”), small portable icons kept by samurai inside their helmets during battles as personal protective deities. They were also used as folk traveling Buddhas, carried by common people on journeys to ensure safety, guidance, and spiritual companionship. These roles highlight the intimate, personal nature of Buddhist devotion in everyday life, beyond temple rituals.

Condition
Antique, used condition. The tip of the Buddha’s nose is chipped, but this can be lightly touched up with ink to make it barely noticeable. There are also signs of wear and accumulated dirt consistent with age.
