Antique British Ceramic Bottle Traditional Folk Art Pottery Shiratamba Like
Description
This antique ceramic bottle is likely of British origin, though similar antique medicine bottles are also known to exist in France. While it may have been used as a medicine bottle, I am not an expert, so I cannot say for certain.
It has a rustic, sandy texture and a simple yet refined folk art beauty. Its form and glaze closely resemble the Japanese Shiratamba Candlestick Tokkuri, a type of utilitarian vessel highly regarded in the Mingei (folk craft) movement. This piece seems to reflect the philosophy of "Yo no Bi" (Beauty of Utility), as advocated by Soetsu Yanagi.
I was particularly drawn to the shape of the mouth and the way it has been repaired, finding great charm in its craftsmanship, which led me to acquire it. With its natural earthy tones, functional beauty, and solid, heavy feel, this bottle makes a wonderful addition to any folk art collection or antique display.
