This is a Netsuke by a contemporary artist. The Chochin Obake (Lantern Ghost) is a type of yokai (supernatural creature) in Japanese folklore, a ghostly lantern. It is a popular yokai that has been depicted in works such as Katsushika Hokusai's Hyaku Monogatari and Ukiyo-e by Utagawa Kuniyoshi. The artist has skillfully captured the delicate texture of the paper lantern, and great care has been taken in crafting the eyes. To achieve a realistic appearance, the eyes are made from deer antler and water buffalo horn. If this were from the Edo period, it would be extremely valuable.
