Vintage Japanese Wood Carved Frog with Lotus Leaf Umbrella – WO655

This is a finely carved Japanese wooden frog figure, probably dating from the mid to late 20th century.

The frog is depicted standing upright in a humorous anthropomorphic pose, holding a large lotus leaf above its head like an umbrella. A dark fan-like object, possibly representing a folding fan or tessen-style iron fan, is tucked into the sash at its waist.

The carving is detailed throughout, with carefully rendered skin texture, facial features, limbs, and clothing-like accessories. The lotus leaf and stem are finished in green, creating a striking contrast with the warm reddish-brown tone of the carved wood.

The overall style recalls the refined animal carvings produced by modern Japanese wood sculptors. In particular, it is reminiscent of artists such as Risaburo Miyamoto, who was well known for small carved and colored frog sculptures, although this piece is unsigned and cannot be attributed to a specific artist.
