Description

This is a Japanese ceramic figurine made of Shigaraki ware (Shigaraki-yaki). It depicts a comical male figure, strongly resembling "Hyottoko," a traditional Japanese folk character known for his skewed, puckered mouth.

The figurine is sculpted as a seated man holding a sake cup (sakazuki) in his right hand. He wears a twisted cloth headband (hachimaki) and is dressed in a kimono finished with a mottled, earthy brown glaze. The skin areas, such as the face, hands, and feet, feature a matte painted finish. The bottom base is flat, and the area within the foot rim is applied with a black cotton-like fabric pad to protect display surfaces from scratches.
