Description

Shigaraki Ware Vase — c.1960–1980 — A Fusion of Traditional Shigaraki Craft and Western Aesthetics

This is a Shigaraki ware vase believed to have been crafted between the 1960s and 1980s. It is made from coarse clay characteristic of Shigaraki, which contains small natural silica inclusions. The clay has been well-fired, and the surface is covered with a flowing ash glaze reminiscent of natural kiln effects. The rich variation in texture and color, brought out by the firing process, embodies the rustic strength and simplicity that define traditional Shigaraki ware.

At the same time, the overall form and glaze tone evoke a distinctly Western aesthetic. The surface texture and earthy color palette are particularly reminiscent of mid-century Scandinavian and European studio pottery. Though firmly rooted in Japanese ceramic tradition, the piece also resonates with a modern, international design sensibility.

There is a potter’s mark on the base, but it is unfortunately illegible.

This is a fascinating work that bridges traditional Shigaraki craftsmanship with the spirit of global modern ceramics. It is highly recommended for both Japanese pottery collectors and those who appreciate cross-cultural interior design.
