Takakura Kangai (Takakura Kangai)
Biography
1884 (Meiji 17) – 1957 (Showa 32)
Born in Oita City.
His real name was Magosaburo. Kangai was his artist name.
In 1901 (Meiji 34), he entered the Kyoto City School of Arts and Crafts, where he studied under Takeuchi Seihō and Yamamoto Shunkyo, among others.
In 1914 (Taisho 3), he was selected for the first time for the Bunten exhibition and received an award. The same work won a gold medal at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco.
Following this, he was selected consecutively for the Bunten exhibition in 1916 and 1917 (Taisho 5 and 6).
In later years, he produced works in the style of the Maruyama-Shijō school and new Southern-style painting.
