Born in Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture.
Graduated from the Department of Design and Painting at Ishikawa Prefectural Technical School and Tokyo School of Art and Design.
Studied under Toyoshu Takamura, and received the Minister of Education's Award from the Nitten School of Education for "Wild Cattle and Nymphs" in 1959 and the Japan Art Academy's Award in 1962 for "Forest Menorah".
In 1975, he became a professor at Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, and a member of the Japan Art Academy. He is a member of the Japan Art Academy.
In 1987, he was elected a Person of Cultural Merit and was awarded the Order of Culture in 1991. In 1996, he was appointed as an advisor to the Nitten exhibition.
He died on January 6, 2010 at the age of 94.
