Description
This is a Japanese antique wooden signboard from the Edo period, originally used as a Hikyaku (courier) identification ornament. Such wooden tags, known as Goyōfuda or courier plaques, were worn by official messengers around the neck, often with a small bell attached, to signify their authorized role in delivering important documents. The piece is finely carved with kanji characters and decorated with a fan motif, showcasing the craftsmanship and symbolic culture of the time. It offers valuable insight into Japan’s Edo-period communication and courier system.
