This Buddhist image is called Senbutsu (塼仏), a rare type of Buddhist relief made by pressing clay into a mold and firing it to create a flat, plaque-like figure. Senbutsu originated in the Tang Dynasty and was introduced to Japan, where it flourished during the Nara period, particularly in the Kinki region. This piece dates back to the Edo period.
It follows the Sansonzon (三尊仏) composition, in which a central principal deity is flanked by two attendant figures.
Center: Kannon Bodhisattva (Avalokiteshvara) Left: Jizo Bodhisattva (Kṣitigarbha) Right: Either a celestial being (Flying Deva) or a Bodhisattva/Daoist figure related to Jizo. The zushi (portable Buddhist shrine) is an old piece with a vermilion Negoro finish. It features intricate copper decorations, and the upper interior is adorned with fine karakusa (arabesque) patterns made of fabric, showcasing exceptional craftsmanship.
