Japanese Antique Buddhist Omikuji Box with 99 Bamboo Fortune Sticks
Era:1920
This is an authentic Japanese antique omikuji fortune box used in a Buddhist setting, likely associated with Kannon (Avalokitesvara) worship. The front is inscribed with “Namu Daijidaihi Kanzeon Bosatsu” (Homage to the Great Compassionate Kannon Bosatsu), suggesting that it was used at a temple, Kannon hall, or other religious site rather than an ordinary household setting.
The box contains 99 bamboo fortune sticks, each marked with numbers and fortune indications. Because of its strong folk character and long use, the piece also has appeal as a work of Japanese mingei, religious folk art, and antique utilitarian craft.
A particularly important point is that the top lid can be opened, but it is secured with wooden pegs and was not intended for frequent opening. Repeated opening may cause damage, loosening, or breakage to the original structure, so it should be handled with great care.
