Antique Japanese Hanging Scroll Kakejiku Samurai Armor Hand Painted Silk ASO435
This is an authentic antique Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku) featuring a striking hand-painted portrait of a fully armored samurai commander. Commanding respect and radiating a quiet strength, this artwork offers a profound visual connection to Japan's martial history and the enduring spirit of the warrior class.
Belonging to the traditional genre of "musha-e" (warrior portraits), this piece meticulously captures the intricate details of classical samurai armor (yoroi) and a helmet (kabuto) adorned with a majestic dragon crest. The artist's precise brushwork is applied directly onto woven silk (kenpon), a premium material that allows for fine detailing and beautiful pigment retention. According to the calligraphy and seal, the artwork was painted by the artist Chokusai in the late spring of 1912 (the final year of the Meiji period). The scroll comes with a wooden storage box to protect the piece.
Traditionally displayed in a tokonoma (alcove), this scroll serves as a powerful and dignified focal point for modern spaces. It is an exceptional addition to a martial arts dojo, a personal study, or a Japanese-inspired living room. The samurai motif stands as a timeless symbol of courage, discipline, and protection, bridging the gap between historical artifact and sophisticated interior decor.

Condition
Used antique condition. As a genuine piece from 1912, it shows distinct signs of its century-long history. There is noticeable spotting (foxing), staining, and some minor creasing across both the painted silk and the mounting fabric. The wooden box also shows natural wear and discoloration consistent with its age. These are standard aging characteristics for an antique scroll and contribute to its wabi-sabi character. Please check the photos carefully to confirm the exact condition before purchasing.
