Description

Antique Japanese Fan-Shaped Wooden Shop Sign – “Yotsume” Crest & Inscription

This is a rare and beautifully aged Japanese wooden shop sign, crafted in the shape of an open folding fan (sensu or ōgi). It features the “Yotsume” (Four Eyes) family crest—four diamond-shaped frames arranged in a cross pattern, traditionally associated with samurai families such as the Hori clan during the Edo period.

  • Material: Hardwood, aged patina

  • Design: Fan-shaped plaque with cutouts representing the fan ribs

  • Front: The crest is painted in white lacquer, and the character 「正」(sho, meaning “correct” or “justice”) is boldly inscribed

  • Back/Side: Carved with the name 「王珉」(Ōmin)

  • Use: Likely used as a merchant’s signboard or decorative element outside a traditional establishment

This sign combines traditional aesthetics and strong symbolic meaning. It would make a unique wall display for collectors of Japanese antiques or folk art.

  • Dimensions: [Insert measurements here]

  • Condition: Some wear consistent with age; please refer to photos for details
