This is a wooden statue of Ukanomitama-no-Mikoto. Although primarily a Shinto deity, this figure represents the syncretism of Shinto and Buddhism. It is quite rare to see this deity riding a fox. While Dakiniten is known for riding a fox, Dakiniten is depicted as a goddess, whereas this statue represents a male deity. This statue dates back to the Edo period, but this deity has been known since the Muromachi period. At Ise Jingu, this deity has been enshrined as Mikura-no-Kami, a Shinto god, since even earlier times.

In the Kojiki, Ukanomitama-no-Mikoto appears in the genealogy of Susanoo-no-Mikoto. Recent information suggests that Susanoo has been known in ancient Shinto since the Jomon period, with traces of his presence found worldwide from that era.

The unusually straight and thick tail of the fox suggests a prayer for a bountiful harvest.
