Vintage Japanese Stone Carved Daitengu Mask Figurine Mt. Takao BT250

This is a rare, vintage Japanese stone carving of a "Daitengu" (long-nosed Tengu) mask. Crafted by a stonemason approximately 70 years ago, this was a limited custom order originally commissioned for a shop at Mount Takao (Takao-san), a sacred mountain famous for its Tengu legends.

According to the provenance, this piece was modeled after the giant Daitengu mask enshrined at the main temple of Mount Takao. Daitengu, also known as "Hanataka Tengu" (tall-nosed Tengu), are believed to possess immense divine powers, symbolized by their prominent long noses. Such custom-made stone artifacts are no longer produced in the area. (Note: A companion "Kotengu" or Karasu Tengu mask from the same collection is also being listed separately).

The mask is carved from a solid block of pale stone. It features the characteristic long nose, large eyes, and distinct facial hair, with traces of original pigment (black, white, and red) remaining on the features. The back is flat with visible, coarse chisel marks from the stonemason's tools.

Size:

The item shows significant signs of aging and weathering. There is natural wear, fading of the painted pigments, and minor natural chips around the unpolished edges. The back and sides exhibit a rough, unfinished texture inherent to the stone carving process.
