This is a pair of vintage Japanese small wooden clappers, known as "hyoshigi". Traditionally used in Japan for festivals, theater performances like Kabuki, or neighborhood fire patrols, these simple yet effective instruments are struck together to create a sharp, penetrating sound.
This particular set has a deeply worn patina, indicating it has been well-used over many years. While it can still be used as a traditional percussion instrument, its rustic character also makes it an interesting historical artifact or a charming accent piece for a Japanese-inspired display.
