Description
This is a Japanese carved boxwood "netsuke" (a traditional miniature sculpture used as a toggle for sagemono), depicting a theatrical mask. It bears the engraved signature "Jiro" on the reverse side.

The netsuke features a finely detailed carving of "Buaku," a comic demon character from traditional Japanese Kyogen theater, characterized by its exaggerated grimace, furrowed brow, and bared teeth. The boxwood material exhibits a smooth surface with a natural, warm brown patina. The reverse side includes a functional "himotoshi" (cord hole) for suspension.
