Antique 19-20th C. Japanese Kinran Brocade Temple Banner Phoenix BRKW174
This is an antique Japanese Buddhist textile, estimated to date from the 19th century (Edo to Meiji period). The presence of sewn cloth loops on the reverse lining indicates it was used as a suspended temple banner or a decorative pillar covering.
The front features Kinran (gold brocade) fabric in a red-orange tone, woven with traditional phoenix (Houou) and floral scrolling motifs. The textile is constructed from patched sections, incorporating a contrasting patch of white and gold geometric brocade, and has an attached red woven cord. The reverse side is lined with a plain, coarsely woven fabric where the structural hanging loops are sewn.
