Description

Pair of Antique Japanese Temple Lacquer Plaques - Jodo Shu Sect - "Enko Daishi" & "Zendo Daishi" WO564

This is a rare and powerful pair of authentic Buddhist Shogongu (temple ornaments), originally used to adorn the interior sanctuary of a Jodo Shu (Pure Land Sect) temple. These heavy wooden plaques were designed to be hung on pillars or walls flanking a central Buddhist altar.

The Sacred Inscriptions:

  • Enko Daishi (圓光大師): The posthumous title of Honen Shonin, the 12th-century founder of the Jodo Shu sect.

  • Zendo Daishi (善導大師): Refers to the great 7th-century Chinese master Shandao, the spiritual source of Pure Land Buddhism.

  • Siddham Script: The top features sacred Bija (seed syllables) representing the divine presence of the Buddhas.

  • Gilded Lotus: The bottom features a carved Lotus flower in gold leaf, symbolizing purity and rebirth.

Size and Specifications:

  • Height: 50.0 cm / 19.7 in

  • Width: 18.0 cm / 7.1 in

  • Thickness: 2.0 cm / 0.8 in

  • Total Weight: 1720 g / 3.79 lbs (Pair)

  • Material: Wood, Urushi Lacquer, Gold Leaf

  • Sect: Jodo Shu (Pure Land Buddhism)

Condition: Good antique condition with significant historical patina. The wood is structurally sound. The black lacquer surface shows natural signs of age, including historic wear, scratches, and minor gilding loss—elements that confirm their long life as genuine temple artifacts. Please inspect the photos for the beautiful "temple silence" texture.
