Japanese Bizen Ware Matcha Tea Bowl Signed Hira-chawan Modern Era
This is a fine example of Japanese Bizen ware, one of Japan’s six ancient kilns. It is a tasteful modern-era Hira-chawan (flat tea bowl), likely dating from around the Meiji to Showa period. A Hira-chawan is a shallow, wide tea bowl traditionally favored for tea gatherings in the warmer months, as its open form allows the matcha to cool more quickly and gives a refreshing visual impression.
As is typical of Bizen ware, this bowl is unglazed. Its appeal comes from the natural effects created during firing, including subtle fire marks, warm tonal changes, and organic surface variation produced by the kiln atmosphere. The exterior shows soft orange and reddish-brown fire coloration, while the interior also presents natural kiln effects and a quiet, understated texture. The result is a bowl with depth, warmth, and rustic elegance.
