Pair of Vintage Japanese Clay Inari Fox Statues Traditional Gofun Finish 18cm

This is a dignified pair of Japanese Inari Fox (Kitsune) statues, traditionally revered as the sacred messengers of Inari Okami, the deity of harvest and prosperity. Crafted from hollow earthenware, these figures carry a soulful, folk-art presence common in shrine offerings.

The statues are finished using a traditional technique where a white base of "Gofun" (seashell powder pigment) is applied over the clay body, followed by hand-painted accents in pale blue, red, and black. This layering gives the foxes their characteristic chalky, matte texture and ethereal appearance.

Key Features:

  • Spiritual Symbolism: A matched pair designed to guard a home altar (Kamidana) or a dedicated sacred space, representing protection and good fortune.

  • Traditional Materials: The use of unglazed clay and natural Gofun pigment reflects authentic Japanese craftsmanship from the mid-20th century.

  • Artisan Details: Note the expressive facial features and the elegant posture of each fox, sitting atop a red-painted pedestal.

  • Wabi-Sabi Character: The natural aging and delicate surface texture embody the beauty of impermanence and historical depth.

Size (Approx. per unit):

  • Height: 18.3 cm / 7.2 in

  • Width: 8.8 cm / 3.5 in

  • Depth: 5.8 cm / 2.3 in

  • Total Weight (Pair): 650 g / 1.43 lbs

Condition & Material Note (Important): Good vintage condition with significant age-related character. Please note that the white Gofun pigment is extremely delicate and prone to flaking or peeling due to its natural properties on unglazed clay. Minor flaking is a normal characteristic of this traditional material and may occur during transit. We recommend handling these pieces with extreme care—avoid rubbing, wiping with water, or applying adhesive tape to the surface. Please inspect the photos to appreciate the authentic, weathered patina.
