Description

■ Description A. Introduction Make a massive statement with this Huge Japanese Porcelain Sake Barrel (Saka-daru). Modeled after the traditional straw-wrapped barrels (Komodaru) seen at Shinto shrines and festivals, this ceramic version functions as a large server or a stunning display piece for an Izakaya or bar.

B. Features & Design

  • Design: The body is molded to look like a barrel wrapped in ropes. It features classic Blue & White (Sometsuke) transfer printing.

  • The Text: The large central characters read "Masamune" (正宗), a legendary name synonymous with high-quality Japanese sake.

  • Auspicious Symbols: The decoration includes Pine Trees (Matsu) and trademarks featuring Cranes, both symbolizing longevity and good fortune.

  • Structure: It has a top lid with a porcelain-capped cork and a bottom spout hole (currently plugged with a cork). Originally, a spigot would be placed here to dispense sake, though it is currently just a cork.

  • Handle: Features a rustic rattan/bamboo wrapped handle.

C. Size & Weight (VERY HEAVY)

  • Height: approx. 33 cm / 13.0 in

  • Width: approx. 23 cm / 9.0 in

  • Weight: 6,200 g / 13.67 lbs

    • Note: This is a substantial, solid piece of porcelain.

D. Condition Condition: Vintage / Good

  • Porcelain: Good vintage condition. No major cracks found on the main body.

  • Corks: The corks show signs of age and wear. If you intend to use this for liquid, the corks may need to be replaced or tested for sealing.

  • Bottom: The mark on the bottom is a blue diamond shape.

E. Usage Ideas

  • Interior Decor: An unbeatable centerpiece for a sushi restaurant, sake bar, or Japanese-style room.

  • Vase: Can be used as a massive flower vessel for large branches.

  • Dispenser: If sealed properly, it can be used to serve sake at parties.

F. Conclusion A rare find due to its size and weight. This porcelain barrel captures the celebratory spirit of Japan.
