Description

Vintage Japanese Mottled Purple Bronze Vase - Signed "Beisai" - Pine Cone Motif 25cm

This is a substantial and high-quality vintage Japanese bronze vase featuring a Hanshidou (斑紫銅) mottled purple finish. This traditional technique creates a unique, cloud-like landscape of dark charcoal and deep reddish-purple tones on the surface of the metal.

The body is decorated with meticulously hand-engraved Matsukasa (Pine Cone) motifs. The precision of the needles and the texture of the pine cones demonstrate the high level of skill of the metalworker. Weighing nearly 3 kg, the vase has a solid, premium feel and excellent stability.

Key Features:

  • Artisan Signature: The base is marked with the incised signature "Beisai" (米斎) along with an artisan seal.

  • Hanshidou Finish: A sophisticated mottled patina achieved through traditional heat and chemical treatments, highly valued for its deep, variegated colors.

  • Symbolic Design: Features hand-carved pine cones, a classic Japanese symbol of longevity and endurance.

  • Impressive Weight: At 2.8 kg, this is a heavy-gauge bronze piece indicating superior casting quality.

Size (Approx.):

  • Height: 25.0 cm / 9.8 in

  • Diameter: 21.0 cm / 8.3 in

  • Weight: 2800 g / 6.17 lbs

Condition: Excellent vintage condition. The bronze is structurally sound. The surface displays a rich, natural aged patina with minor signs of historical handling.

Note on Artist: The signature on the base reads Beisai (米斎). This is likely the work of the metalworker Utashiro Beisai (歌代米斎), though detailed records of this artisan are predominantly found in specialized regional archives.
