Legacy of the Master: Tea Bowl by Mukunoki Eizō, Disciple of Kawai Kanjiro (Tomobako)

This is a truly magnificent tea bowl by Mukunoki Eizō (椋木英三), a high-level disciple of Kawai Kanjiro (河井寛次郎), one of the leading figures of the Mingei (Folk Craft) movement in Japan. This piece powerfully inherits the artistic vision and Mingei spirit of his master, originating from the Gojo-zaka pottery center in Kyoto.

Highlights:

  • Legacy of the Master (Kanjiro's Shadow): This tea bowl bears a strong family resemblance to Kanjiro's own work. The deep, complex blue glaze, often associated with Kanjiro's unique use of cobalt blue (Gosu) and Namako glaze (a complex, variegated ash glaze), is masterfully executed. The color shifts and variegation, reminiscent of the ocean, pay powerful homage to his teacher.

  • Strong, Tactile Form: Mukunoki's unique faceted shape, a characteristic often found in Kanjiro's work, not only provides an interesting sculptural quality but also ensures a secure and pleasant grip when held in the hands. This practical beauty—Yō-no-bi (beauty of utility)—was the core philosophy of the Mingei movement, here realized through Kanjiro's influence.

  • Complex, Deep Blue Glaze: The rich, complex blue glaze, achieved through cobalt and variegated ash, is a key element that demonstrates Mukunoki's mastery of the blue glazes championed by his master. The depth and character are exceptional.

  • Powerful Foot: The strong, well-formed foot (as seen in image 35) provides a firm foundation, characteristic of Kanjiro's focus on functional ceramic art.

Mukunoki Eizō studied under Kawai Kanjiro for many years and, while deeply influenced, established his own artistic voice while always maintaining respect for his teacher. This tea bowl is a fine example of how Mukunoki's work honors and advances his master's legacy. The tomobako (wooden box) features the author's illustration and calligraphy, indicating it was well-preserved.
