This is a charming vintage Japanese hand-carved wooden tray in the shape of a "Tai" (sea bream). In Japanese culture, the sea bream is a powerful symbol of good luck and prosperity, derived from the word "Omedetai" (auspicious/celebratory).
The tray is a traditional souvenir from Akayu Onsen (赤湯温泉), a historic hot spring resort in Yamagata Prefecture. The interior features detailed carvings of a local landscape, including a torii gate, a shrine/temple, and pine trees. The fish's eye and scales are also expressively carved.
