Japanese Omisu Palace Sudare Bamboo Screen with Copper Fittings and Yamato-Nishiki Brocade Trim
Description
This is not an ordinary “ozashiki sudare” bamboo screen, but a Goten-yō Omisu – the highest-grade palace sudare, historically used in imperial palaces, Shinto shrines, Buddhist temples, and the residences of noble families.
The Omisu is more than a functional furnishing; it is a symbol of status, dignity, and spirituality. Finely handwoven from slender bamboo strips, its edges are framed with Yamato-Nishiki, one of Japan’s most luxurious traditional brocades. Decorative copper fittings engraved with floral motifs and elegant tassels further enhance its prestige.
Since the Heian period (794–1185), Omisu screens were essential in shinden-zukuri aristocratic architecture, serving as partitions that conveyed authority and refinement. Even today, Omisu are used as Shinto shrine curtains, Buddhist altar fittings, and as prestigious furnishings in the homes of distinguished families.
