Description

Japanese Edo Period Karatsu Tea Bowl Early to Mid Edo  Wabi Sabi Pottery PCP254

This is a rare and historically significant Karatsu tea bowl from the Edo period (17-18th century). It showcases a remarkable natural phenomenon where only the feldspar-based glaze components remain, while other glaze materials have partially weathered or flaked away over time.

Karatsu ware was traditionally fired in climbing kilns (noborigama), where temperatures varied greatly depending on the kiln's interior location. In areas exposed to lower firing temperatures, the glaze did not completely melt, making it more prone to gradual deterioration. What remains is a fascinating natural surface that reflects the passage of time and the dynamic nature of early ceramic firing techniques.

The mikomi (inner surface) of the bowl retains its glaze beautifully, displaying a soft luster and classic Karatsu glaze character with natural crackling and warm earth tones.
