This is a rare Japanese antique travel raincoat (Dochu Gappa) from the late Edo period, crafted from handwoven indigo-dyed cotton with a traditional ikat (kasuri) pattern. This type of outerwear was worn by travelers and messengers to shield against wind and light rain during long journeys on foot.
The coat is composed of patched and reinforced panels, a characteristic of boro (repaired folk textiles) that reflects a culture of reuse and practicality. The exterior features intricate geometric kasuri motifs in deep indigo, while the interior displays a contrasting striped weave. Ties and edging are finished with natural hemp or cotton cord.
This piece is a beautiful example of Japanese folk textile art and is perfect for collectors of wabi-sabi garments, antique clothing, or interior textile display.
