Temari with geometric patterns and botanical designs such as pine trees
Two from the late Edo period.
Two from the Meiji era.
Two from the Taisho period.
Temari can be distinguished from each period by its hardness, the type of thread, and the type of dye.
All of these are characteristic of the Tohoku region of Japan.
Even in the Edo period, grandmothers in each household made these Temari, rather than having them made by specialized craftsmen.
The patterns and stitching techniques are unique to each region of Japan.
However, the weaving method differs slightly depending on the grandmother of the family.
They have been handed down to their descendants.
Since the early Showa period, people stopped playing with Temari, so the tradition has also died out.
As you can see, it is difficult to make Temari with this kind of atmosphere in the present age because the way of thinking and living of the people in the past are completely different from those of today.
Temari is a toy for girls, and there are two types: one is played on the ground like a basketball, and the other is played by launching it into the air.
