Imari Arita "Zoshuntei Sanpo zo"
This is from the late Edo period and originates from Arita.
Since it was exported overseas from Nagasaki, it has a design catered to Western or European-American tastes and is quite delicately made. The brushwork is very skillful, and the coloring from the gosu pigment is exceptionally vibrant. It's a wonderful cup.

Trade had been declining since the early 18th century, but was revived in 1841 when Arita merchant Hisatomi Yojibei acquired exclusive sales rights. Hisatomi branded his products with the name "Zoshuntei Sanpozou", the first branded Arita product. This monopoly on exports drew resentment from other merchants and kiln owners. The number of Akae-ya (red painting businesses) was limited to 16, but there were strong calls for expansion, leading to nine more being permitted, including by merchants like Fukagawa Eisaiemon and Hirabayashi Ippei. With the Meiji Reformation in 1871, the longstanding Sarayama Daikan office was closed, lifting the regulations on kiln businesses and Akae-ya, freeing up the industry.
