This is called a Kakushi dansu (secret hidden chest). It is used to store things that you don't want anyone to find. The small key can be inserted into both the upper keyhole and the keyhole on the right side. Turn the key counterclockwise, and lower the middle latch downward to unlock it. The keyhole on the left side is a dummy. To open this door, open the central partition like a door (please refer to the image). After that, the left door slides to the right like a Fusuma (please refer to the image). It is a sturdy piece made of solid Keyaki wood.
The materials used are old materials from the Edo period that have been reconstructed in modern times.
