Description
This is a crystal magatama from the Kofun period.
Appraising magatama can be challenging, but this one is from the Kofun period. It features a hole on one end, a typical characteristic of the era, and shows signs of aging with a layer of rust-like patina. It's made of a type of crystal that's no longer produced today and has a misty or smoky opaque appearance, typical of ancient magatama.
In the Kofun period of Japan (3rd-7th century), the domestically produced crystal was known as "Wa suishou" and had a much lower transparency and a whitish or slightly grayish hue compared to modern crystal. Wa suishou was mainly found in various regions throughout Japan, such as Gifu Prefecture, Hakusan City in Ishikawa Prefecture, and Matsumoto City in Nagano Prefecture. These crystals were typically found in the veins of mountain strata.
During the Kofun period, Wa suishou became particularly popular from the later part of the Yayoi period. It was highly regarded and even mentioned in "Gishi Wajinden" as a treasured item.
