This is a tool used for making traditional Japanese roof tiles in the Edo period. It is a tool used for firing. It is called a "cut type," and it was used to flatten the tiles before firing or to slice the tiles. Similar tools have been designated as important tangible folk cultural assets in Kyoto Prefecture with the same purpose.

Everything from private homes to national treasures and world heritage buildings were made with such tools.
