Stoneware Nanban Ware Vase
Era:Momoyama Early Edo period
It was brought to Japan from the late 16th century to the early 17th century.
This vase closely resembles Bizen ware in texture, surface, and weight, but based on its shape and overall design, it appears to be Southeast Asian Nanban ware. Nanban ware ("Nanban-yaki") refers to ceramics that originated from Southeast Asia and were imported to Japan. These wares were introduced to Japan during the Nanban Trade in the 16th century. Nanban ware was highly favored by notable figures such as Sen no Rikyū and Toyotomi Hideyoshi, which contributed to its popularity. Its production regions include southern China, Vietnam, the Philippine Islands, and parts of India.
Nanban ware was highly favored by tea masters like Sen no Rikyū and Toyotomi Hideyoshi due to its rustic, wabi-sabi aesthetic, which perfectly complemented the philosophy of the Japanese tea ceremony. Its unglazed, earthy texture and simple yet refined forms embodied the natural beauty and imperfection valued in traditional Japanese culture. Imported from Southeast Asia during the 16th century, Nanban ware brought a unique, exotic charm that captivated Japan's tea culture elites.
