Description
Nadeushi wooden cow ornament.
Tenmangu and other shrines in Japan are also decorated with cows like this one.
This is a Nadeushi (æ«ç) figurine from either the Edo period in Japan or the Joseon dynasty in Korea. The origin of Nadeushi is said to come from a Chinese magical technique. The tradition involves stroking one's own ailing or uncomfortable body part and then stroking the same part of the figurine of a cow, with the belief that the illness would transfer to the cow and be cured. Nadeushi is also associated with various deities such as Daikokuten, Goto-tenno, and Tenjin, and was widely believed to bring good luck. When examining the backside of the figurine, the carving is quite bold, similar to that of woodworking during the Joseon dynasty. The depiction of the cow's shell and facial expression contains Japanese elements, and faithfully reproduces the characteristics of the cow, as if crafted by a skilled sculptor during the Edo period. It is from either the Joseon period (Korea) or the Edo period (Japan).
