This is a vintage Japanese shakujo (monk's sounding staff), a traditional esoteric Buddhist ritual implement. It is a utilitarian tool originally used by Yamabushi (mountain ascetic hermits) in Shugendo practices and during pilgrimages.

The staff features a brass finial with six metal rings attached to a central metal loop, specifically designed to produce a jingling sound to warn away animals and insects while walking. The brass head is securely mounted onto a simple cylindrical wooden handle.

The item is in vintage condition, showing signs of aging and historical use. The brass parts exhibit surface oxidation, tarnishing, and minor scratches. The wooden handle shows general surface wear and slight scuffs around the joint.
