Description

This is an antique Japanese smoking set consisting of a kiseru-zutsu (pipe case) and a small container believed to have been used for carrying shredded tobacco. Based on the materials, construction, surface patina, and signs of long use, it likely dates from around the Meiji period, late 19th to early 20th century.

Both pieces are made primarily from bamboo and have developed a warm amber-brown surface through many years of handling. Their simple, practical construction and well-aged appearance give the set a strong mingei, or Japanese folk craft, character.

One of the most attractive details is the traditional repair visible on the tobacco container. Natural splits in the bamboo have been reinforced with two small bow-tie-shaped inlays known in Japanese woodworking as chigiri (千切り). These pale-colored inlays appear to be made from deer antler.

Chigiri are inserted across a split or joint to hold the two sides together and prevent further separation. Interestingly, the Japanese word chigiri can also be written 契り, meaning a bond, pledge, or connection between people. Although this is a different written word from the woodworking term, the shared pronunciation gives the repair a poetic association: two separated sides are joined and held together again.

This old repair is therefore not merely a practical reinforcement but also an appealing example of traditional Japanese craftsmanship and the culture of repairing and continuing to use valued objects.

The bamboo shows natural age-related splitting, especially around the repaired area. The darkened surfaces and accumulated wear around these splits suggest that they are old rather than recent. The chigiri appear to have been inserted to stabilize these naturally occurring splits.

The lids and fittings remain present, and overall the set is in good antique condition for its age. There are scratches, stains, surface wear, natural bamboo splits, and other signs of long use. No major structural damage other than the photographed age-related splits and old repairs was observed.
