Description

Japanese Taisho Period Bronze Rabbit Okimono – Signed Ono Tohachi, dated November 1919

This is an antique Japanese bronze rabbit okimono dating to the Taisho period.

The inscription appears to read “Taisho 8, November” and “Ono Tohachi,” corresponding to November 1919. Above the name, there is also a carved mark that may be a stylized signature or kao. Based on the placement and style of the inscription, Ono Tohachi is likely the maker’s name, although further biographical details about this artist are currently unknown.

The rabbit is modeled in a calm seated posture, with large alert ears, expressive eyes, and finely carved fur details. The surface has a deep aged dark brown patina with areas of oxidation and verdigris, giving the piece a strong antique presence.

With its substantial weight of approximately 2.53 kg, this bronze rabbit has a solid and impressive feel. It would make an excellent display piece for a collection of Japanese metalwork, animal sculpture, zodiac-related art, or Taisho-period decorative arts.
